Jack of All Trades, Future Master of UX
I’m Shelby Schaerrer, and I have always wanted to be good at absolutely everything. This meant that I learned dance, soccer, basketball, sewing, and theatre as a kid. Then in middle and high school I learned a wide very wide variety of instruments in band, unable to stick to just one like most do.
In college I changed my major 31 times (this is not an exaggeration). I had a hard time picking one because I didn’t want to limit myself to just one field. I wanted to learn animation, I wanted to work in a hospital lab, I wanted to be a band teacher, I wanted to learn about cybersecurity, I wanted to go into nursing. No one thing could every satisfy my need to experience as much as possible.
But in 2022 I changed my major to Web Design with an emphasis in Interaction Design, and it is everything I’ve ever wanted. Every project is wildly different from the previous, and doing user research allows me to learn about a lot of people. The problem-solving involved keeps the field very interesting for me.
Although I’m done changing my major, and done hopping around for now, I don’t regret the exploration I did. Because I ended up taking a lot of entry-level classes for a lot of those previous majors, I have a lot of extra skills that have and will continue to be helpful in my work. I also had the opportunity to interact with a lot of different people, and that experience may help in user research in the future.
In short, all of the various experiences I had being a amateur in a lot of areas will ultimately help me become a master of UX Design.
